Why an insecticide?
If you are planning to visit Puerto Rico during Christmas you need to know we are having some problems with mosquitoes, especially with the Aedes Aegypti, which is spreading a disease called chikungunya. We strongly advise that you get a good insect repellent, otherwise you may find yourself in bed, arthritic, for about a week. Nothing lethal, though. You will be ready for parrandas within a few days.
The “Chikungun” song and the Plena’s oral traditon
Plena is one of the native music rhythms on Puerto Rico. It originated in working-class neighborhoods in the coastal regions of the island. During the time, it was used to communicate issues of social justice and community. In the good tradition of Plena, a music group called Plenarmonica has come up with the Chikungun Plena, a song that, with humor and candor, documents this arthritic period of our history.
