Villancicos in the Puerto Rican Christmas Music Repertoire

Puerto Rican Christmas music has experienced a stylistic diversification from villancicos to boleros, tunas, and salsa. Alegría, Alegría, Alegría is one of the most relevant villancicos.

The Villancico was a musical and poetic form of the Iberian Peninsula and eventually Latin America, which was very popular between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries. Villancicos were originally profane songs with a chorus of popular origin and harmonized to various voices. Later they began to be sung in the churches and became associated specifically with Christmas.

The villancico developed as a secular polyphonic genre when religious villancicos gained popularity in the second half of the 16th century in Spain and its colonies in Latin America. These devotional villancicos, which were sung during matins of the feasts of the Catholic calendar, became extremely popular in the 17th century and continued in popularity until the decline of the genre in the 18th and 19th centuries.
